Green Initiatives
Social Action
The Social Action team helps our fellow neighbors. There are many principles that are part of the Jewish religion, but one that many focus on is around “love thy neighbor.” This can be seen in various parts of the Torah, and one of the main “offshoots” of this statement is found in the Talmud:
כל ישראל ערבים זה לז — “All of Israel are responsible for each other.”
JEWISH FAMILY TABLE
Family Table is ATC’s representative with the Family Table Program, providing kosher dry goods to families in need. Family Table encourages members to donate designated items throughout the year. It accepts donations of food in lieu of admission to many events throughout the year.
BLOOD DRIVES
“Whoever saves a single life, it is as if he had saved the whole world,” according to the Jewish sages. But everybody can do better than that, because a single blood donation can save one, two, or even three lives. Blood drives are hosted periodically at ATC.

Green Initiatives
Rabbi Jonathan Hausman often quotes an ancient midrash that says:
“When God created the first human beings, God led them around all the trees of the Garden of Eden and said: ‘Look at My works! See how beautiful they are—how excellent! For your sake I created them all. See to it that you do not spoil and destroy My world; for if you do, there will be no one else to repair it.'"
Jewish philosophy and thought tell us to be good stewards of our one earth. ATC supports that philosophy through its Green Initiatives, actions which are designed to be sustainable, or to lower our carbon footprint.
To date, these are the green initiatives carried out by our congregation and staff:
- Recycling of all recyclable materials, such as cans, bottles, plastics, paper, cardboard
- Use of earth-friendly cleaning materials
In addition, the synagogue is planning to:
- Compost all compostable materials from our kitchen, such as fruit and vegetable scraps
- Create a garden in the backyard, utilizing our garden compost
- Use our garden as a teaching tool for our religious school children
- Harvest and cook produce from our garden for events at ATC
